Why is it that no matter how many times you vacuum, your house always seems dusty? It’s enough to make you lose your mind. But before you throw in the towel, check to see if your vacuum is functioning properly. One of the most common Dyson vacuum problems is a blocked filter. Fine dust and animal hair can quickly build up and block the flow of air, making it difficult for the vacuum to suction up dirt. First, let’s take a look at the dyson filter. The dyson filter is responsible for trapping fine dust and dirt particles. Over time, the dyson filter can become clogged with dirt and hair, which can reduce suction power. To clean the dyson filter, simply remove it from the vacuum and wash it in warm water. Do not use conventional soap as this may clog the pores in the filter. Once it’s dry, replace it back in the vacuum.
Dyson is a company that is known for being innovative and stylish. Their vacuums are no different. In fact, dyson will tell you that their vacuums do not have belts. This is not true. The belt is hidden inside the machine. The belt actually rarely breaks though. With Dysons if the brush roller stops spinning the problem is usually more serious than a broken belt. Normally when this happens it can mean the brush roller gears have melted. Unfortunately Dyson does not sell these gears and usually you have to replace the entire brush roller head if the gears are melted. That can be costly but even worse is that Dyson does not make enough repair parts so these heads are often on backorder. So, if you’re looking for a power head, you might be out of luck or have to put one on backorder.
Another dyson problem is a clogged brush roller. If the brush stops spinning or starts making noise, it’s likely due to a blockage. And finally, if your dyson suddenly turns off during use, it could be because of an overheated motor. So before you give up on your dyson, make sure it’s not just in need of a little repair.
If the vacuum is not turning on at all there are a couple possible causes. If in the steps above you found and removed a clog it could simply be that the vacuum overheated and shut itself off. If that is the case wait 24 hours and turn it back on. However, another problem with Dysons are failed power switches. This is not likely a repair you should try at home but it also is not a particularly costly repair either. Generally it will cost about an hour labor plus the cost of the part.
Another super common reason a Dyson will not turn on is a bad power cord. Vacuum cleaner power cords get moved around constantly unlike other appliances. They fray internally and often lose continuity. This will keep the Dyson from turning on at all. This is also not a vacuum repair you should do at home. This can be more costly since the cord itself is pricey due to increasing copper prices. It’s not out of the question to do this repair though if your Dyson is newer and in otherwise good shape.
One of the worst problems you can have with your Dyson is the wire loom. This really only affects Dyson Ball and the Dyson model DC50 and soft carpet Dyson ball are notorious for it. The wire loom in a Dyson is a complex multi wire assembly that snakes from the top of the Dyson all the way to the power head. If you find that your power head is not turning on but the rest of the vacuum is turning on this might be your problem. The issue with this repair is not that the wire loom is expensive. It is the insane amount of labor needed to complete the repair. Most repair shops will decline this type of repair.
Don’t despair though. The problem I mention above can also be caused because of a fault in the brush head assembly. Like I mention before the brush head assembly is often not available because dyson simply does not make enough replacement parts. Let’s be honest here. Dyson doesn’t want you fixing your vacuum. The don’t want the vacuum repaired, they want you to buy a new one! The problem with a part in the head being defective is they do not sell repair components for Dyson power heads. You have to buy the entire power head assembly.
There are three common powerheads for Dysons. Models DC41 UP13 UP14 UP20 Kinetic Multifloor II and most other modern full size Dyson Ball vacuums use part number 967039-01 alternative part numbers 967039-01, 968415-01, 92077401, 96877201 967039-01. Bear in mind this part does not come with the brush rollers or the base plate. So if your brush roller is also defective (usually the short side brush roller also melts when power heads on Dyson’s break) you will also have to buy a new brush roller as well. Fortunately the base plates rarely fail so you likely wont need a new one of those.
You can buy these from us when we have them in stock https://www.vacuumsrus.com/product/cleaning/vacuum-parts/dyson/powerhead-assembly-for-dyson-models-dc41-up13-up14-up20-kinetic-multifloor-ii-967039-01/
We some times offer reconditioned power heads as well when in stock https://www.vacuumsrus.com/product/cleaning/vacuum-parts/dyson/reconditioned-powerhead-assembly-for-dyson-dc65-dc66-and-up13/ or https://www.vacuumsrus.com/product/cleaning/vacuum-parts/dyson/product-11/
Dyson model DC40 is an older smaller model of Dyson and it uses a special power head that only works for this model. Model DC24 and model DC25 are even older and use their own special heads as well. These have not been available from Dyson for many many years. However, from time to time vacuum stores with old back stock will sell out their stock and we some times get them in stock. Some times you can also get reconditioned or rebuilt heads that are in decent shape as well. That is dicey though because the power head takes such a beating older ones are often not in good shape.
When we have DC25 powerheads available we have them here https://www.vacuumsrus.com/product/cleaning/vacuum-parts/dyson/gray-reconditioned-dyson-dc25-cleaner-head-assembly-915499-07-915499-04/

DC25 heads carry part numbers 915499-07, 915499-04
If you have a model DC50 or the so called “soft carpet” model (it does a terrible job of cleaning soft carpet by the way) you will have a better chance of finding a power head. They are part number 965071-02. To my knowledge they no longer manufacture this model but they are a more recent model so the heads are more readily available.
If you seriously got this far in the article I commend you. You are a trooper. For real though. Stop playing around with your vacuum. Bring it in to a reputable repair store. Maybe you aren’t local to Vacuums R Us & Sewing Too – Boulder Store or Vacuums R Us & Sewing Too – Arvada Store and can’t bring it to us. Well, chances are there is a reputable store near you. Check there google reviews. Yeah, I get it some vacuum stores are ran by jerks and maybe you ran in to one. Give another shop a try. It’s well worth forming a relationship with your local vacuum repair shop. Dyson’s official service center locator can be found here https://www.dyson.com/support/repairs-and-servicing-information
