Dyson clutch rebuild for models DC33 DC14 and DC07

Welcome! In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of rebuilding a Dyson clutch. This task can be tricky, but with the right tools and careful attention to detail, you can successfully restore your vacuum’s clutch. We’ll also cover some common issues that may arise during the rebuild process.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Picks or small flathead screwdrivers
  • Torx T10 screwdriver (part of a security bit set)
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Masking tape or packing tape

Step 1: Removing the Clutch

  1. Cut the Belts: Start by cutting off the old belts since you’ll be replacing them with new ones.

  2. Remove the C-Clip:

    • Use picks to gently pull the C-clip apart from either side.
    • Cover the clip with your hand to prevent it from flying across the room.
    • Important: Don’t lose the C-clip! Some rebuild kits include a replacement, but others do not.
  3. Remove the Metal Clip:

    • Slide off the metal clip. Take note of its bent shape for reassembly later.
    • Set the clip aside.
  4. Remove Screws:

    • Use a Torx T10 screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the clutch in place.
    • Be careful with the clip securing the clutch; if it breaks, the clutch is irreparable.

Step 2: Disassembling the Clutch

  1. Remove the Clutch Components:

    • Gently press the tab holding the clutch in place with a flathead screwdriver.
    • If necessary, use isopropyl alcohol as a lubricant to ease the process.
    • Turn the clutch over to allow the internal components to fall out.
    • Carefully remove the clutch plate. You can flip it over to use the new, unused side.
  2. Handle Small Parts:

    • Three small beads will come out during disassembly. These are easy to lose, so set them aside carefully.
    • Clean all metal pieces with isopropyl alcohol.

Step 3: Reassembling the Clutch

  1. Reinstall Components:

    • Place the metal piece back into the clutch.
    • Feed the new belt through the appropriate slot until it pops out the other side.
    • Install the three small beads into their slots.
    • Place the corresponding metal piece over the beads to secure them.
  2. Reassemble the Clutch Mechanism:

    • Reinsert the clutch components, aligning them with the grooves inside the clutch housing.
    • Carefully push down to secure the components without dislodging the beads.
  3. Install the Belt and Metal Clip:

    • Install the new belt around the appropriate pulley.
    • Align the clutch components and gently press them together. Ensure that the clip snaps into place without forcing it.
  4. Secure the C-Clip:

    • Squeeze the C-clip to its original shape before reinstallation.
    • Use a driver to press it back onto the clutch shaft.

Step 4: Testing the Rebuilt Clutch

  1. Engage and Disengage the Clutch:
    • When the clutch is engaged, turning the small belt should move the white pulley.
    • Disengage the clutch and ensure that turning the small belt no longer moves the pulley.
  2. Apply Tension:
    • With the clutch engaged, apply tension to the belt and ensure the pulley continues to move.
    • Disengage the clutch and confirm the pulley is stationary when the small belt is turned.

Step 5: Final Touches

  1. Seal the Clutch:

    • If the original sticker is damaged, use masking or packing tape to seal the clutch.
  2. Reinstall the Clutch:

    • Refer to additional resources for guidance on reinstalling the clutch into your vacuum cleaner.

By following these steps, you’ll have a fully rebuilt Dyson clutch ready for reinstallation. For more detailed instructions on clutch removal and installation, check out the related videos on our YouTube channel.

Note: Dyson clutch rebuild kits are non-returnable due to the complexity of the task and high failure rates during the rebuild process.
