Foot Switch Replacement on Kirby

Replacing the Foot Switch on a Kirby Vacuum

Tools Required:

  • Torx bits (T20 and T15)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Clear synthetic grease (optional but recommended)
  • Zip ties

 

Step 1: Prepare the Vacuum

  1. Remove the Bag:

    • Pull the bag off by pulling it sideways until it pops off.
  2. Secure the Power Cord:

    • Use zip ties to keep the cord together, preventing it from falling all over the place.
    • Disengage the cord from the vacuum by unplugging it.
  3. Remove the Handle:

    • Press the push button located on the handle, and then pull the handle off.

Step 2: Disassemble the Vacuum

  1. Remove the Cord Retainer:

    • Use a T20 Torx bit to remove the screw holding the cord retainer.
    • Use a flathead screwdriver to pop the retainer off.
  2. Detach the Power Cord:

    • The cord will simply unplug once the retainer is off.
    • Use a T15 Torx bit to remove the screws holding the cord in place.
  3. Remove the Vacuum Head:

    • Spin the belt raiser to lift the belt off the motor shaft, then remove the vacuum head.
    • Use a T20 Torx bit to remove the two screws on the front.

Step 3: Remove the Old Foot Switch Assembly

  1. Remove the Plastic Switch Actuator:

    • Pop off the actuator by releasing the two plastic clips holding it in place.
  2. Drop the Transmission:

    • From the bottom of the vacuum, remove the three long T15 screws.
    • Slide the transmission out after removing the belt from the pulley.
  3. Remove the Old Foot Switch Assembly:

    • Remove the final screw holding the foot switch assembly in place.
    • Take out the entire foot switch assembly.

Step 4: Install the New Foot Switch Assembly

  1. Apply Grease (Optional):

    • Apply a clear synthetic grease to the new foot switch assembly.
  2. Install the New Foot Switch Assembly:

    • Insert the metal rod of the new foot switch into the appropriate hole.
    • Secure the assembly with the short screw and lock washer.
  3. Reinsert the Transmission:

    • Align the belt and the transmission, ensuring the metal rod fits into the slot.
    • Attach the three long screws to secure the transmission.

Step 5: Reassemble the Vacuum

  1. Reattach the Plastic Switch Actuator:

    • Hook the actuator to the metal rod and clip it into place.
  2. Replace the Lid:

    • Secure the lid using the unique beveled screws in the front and the T20 screws in the back.
  3. Reattach the Vacuum Head:

    • Drop the belt onto the motor and secure the vacuum head.
  4. Reconnect the Power Cord:

    • Reinsert the power cord, securing it with the cord retainer and screws.

Step 6: Final Assembly and Testing

  1. Reattach the Handle and Bag:

    • Snap the handle and bag back into place.
  2. Test the Vacuum:

    • Turn on the vacuum and check that the power drive engages and disengages smoothly.
